Burning BNSF Rail Car Extinguished
Lincoln Fire and Rescue worked throughout the night to put out a burning rail car at the Burlington Northern Rail Yards in Lincoln.
A Burlington Northern source says a train car caught on fire Monday at the Burlington Northern Rail Yards at 801 West O Street.
Lincoln Fire and Rescue Division Chief Roger Bonin said the car involved is a gondola type which has scrap inside. The car had undergone some repair with a welder. The sparks from the welder caught wood chips in the car on fire. LFR had responded twice to the same issue in the same rail car earlier that day.
LFR Assistant Chief Pat Borer said it took three tries to put it out completely. "They moved it to a more isolated area, overturned the car at which point we could get water directly to the points that were on fire and once we extinguished the majority of the fire, we were able to take heavy equipment, spread it out, then we had sand and dirt material that we're able to cover over the top of it and completely extinguish it."
Bonin said unlike most rail cars, there are no manifests for scrap metal to indicate what exactly is there. Fire officials earlier said they believe magnesium is on the train. According to Bonin, with the toxic chemicals being released into the air and no knowledge of what was burning, the Health Department was called to monitor air quality throughout the city.
With winds Monday night light and variable, a slight odor similar to burning plastic was reported all around the rail yard and reports from residents near 7th & A, 16th and Washington, 27th and Van Dorn.
Bonin said none of the air sampling done by the Health Department reached anywhere close to the thresholds to be a threat to the public.
No fire hydrants are inside the track area so water was brought in by a number of rural fire departments and the Air National Guard.
